Control a Windows PC from Home Assistant with HASS.Agent
HASS.Agent links a Windows PC with Home Assistant. Home Assistant can send notifications and commands to the PC, while the PC can expose sensors and quick actions back to Home Assistant.
What you need
A Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, Home Assistant, MQTT and the HASS.Agent software/integration. Follow the project’s current installation requirements because the client and integration can change independently.
1. Install HASS.Agent on Windows
Install the Windows client and any required runtime components. You can configure it to start when you log in.
2. Add the Home Assistant integration
Install the HASS.Agent integration through HACS, restart Home Assistant and add the integration under Devices & services.
3. Create a Home Assistant token
Create a dedicated long-lived access token for HASS.Agent and paste it into the client configuration. Treat this token like a password: do not put it in screenshots, videos or public configuration files.
4. Configure MQTT
Create dedicated MQTT credentials for HASS.Agent and point the client at your MQTT broker. Dedicated credentials make the connection easier to revoke or troubleshoot later.
5. Quick Actions
Quick Actions let the PC control Home Assistant entities. For example, a keyboard shortcut on the PC can toggle the office lights.
6. Sensors
HASS.Agent can expose Windows information to Home Assistant, such as CPU information, logged-in user or whether a webcam is active. A webcam sensor could, for example, trigger a busy light while you are on a call.
7. Commands and notifications
Home Assistant can send commands in the other direction: control media, shut down the PC, run approved commands, display notifications or send text-to-speech messages.
Satellite service
The satellite service allows selected sensors and commands to remain available when nobody is logged into Windows. Use this for tasks that genuinely need to work before user logon.
