Zigbee and Thread on One Adapter in Home Assistant

A dual-radio coordinator can run Zigbee and a Thread Border Router from one physical box. This guide follows my SMLIGHT dual-radio setup over Ethernet.

Configure the radios

Set one radio for Zigbee and the second for Matter over Thread/OpenThread Border Router duties. Ethernet lets you position the radio away from the Home Assistant server.

Move Zigbee2MQTT

Stop Zigbee2MQTT, update its serial/coordinator connection to the new network radio, save and start it again. Watch the logs while the existing network reconnects.

Add OpenThread Border Router

Install/configure the OpenThread Border Router component and point it at the network coordinator endpoint. If Home Assistant is virtualised under Proxmox, check what serial hardware the VM can actually see.

Pair a Matter-over-Thread device

Use the Home Assistant mobile app, scan the Matter QR code and test the device before building automations.
