Add a Rain Sensor to Home Assistant with Zigbee2MQTT

A rain sensor can become part of irrigation, garden and weather automations rather than simply telling you that it is wet outside.

Pair and rename

Permit joining in Zigbee2MQTT, put the sensor into pairing mode, then give it a useful name and update the Home Assistant entity name.

Check the entities

The sensor in my setup exposes rain state and intensity plus battery/charging information, illuminance and Zigbee link quality. Exact entities vary by model.

Mount and test

Mount it where rain can reach it and where you can still maintain it. Test the rain state and intensity rather than waiting three weeks for British weather to cooperate.

Useful automations

Combine rain with soil-moisture sensors and irrigation controls, or notify yourself when rain starts while windows are open.
