Use a USB Keypad to Control Home Assistant

Not everybody wants to talk to Alexa just to turn a light on. A cheap USB numeric keypad can become a physical Home Assistant controller.

Pass it through

If Home Assistant is a Proxmox VM, add the USB keypad to the VM and reboot if necessary.

Find the input device

Under Settings → System → Hardware → All hardware, find the keypad input event such as /dev/input/event3.

Configure and learn key codes

Add the keyboard-remote configuration to configuration.yaml, restart, then listen for keyboard_remote_command_received events while pressing each key.

Create automations

Use event triggers for the key codes. Trigger IDs and a Choose block let one automation handle several buttons for lights, curtains, TV controls or scripts.
